Ordinarily, men and women who are attractive earn about $230,000US more average salary (based on 2010 figures) than their less attractive counterparts, lead happier lives and marry attractive partners who are highly educated. Dr. Daniel Hamermesh, the economics professor at the University of Texas-Austin who compiled these findings in his book, Beauty Pays: Why Attractive People Are More Successful, based his definition of “attractive” primarily on facial symmetry, considering other factors such as expression and overall structure secondarily. With advancements in cosmetic medicine, you can achieve better facial symmetry, a more aesthetically pleasing face and look more youthful with a minimally invasive treatment known as dermal fillers.

You have the option of undergoing treatment with a microcannula featuring a very small diameter. When compared to traditional hypodermic needles, blunt-tip microcannulae have been shown to significantly minimize patient bruising, swelling and infection. This method reduces procedural pain and enables your desired results to appear sooner because it involves less puncture sites for less trauma (only one or two versus the several required with needles). Patients are also able to receive treatments with a greater level of flexibility. Only very few medical injectors in Toronto can perform this unique technique. Any administering medical professional must have experience and talent in order to properly treat their patients. Because they are more flexible than hypodermic needles, microcannulae must be carefully guided through the surface of the skin toward the targeted area. The injectable specialists at Edelstein Cosmetic possess the skill and comfort with a wide variety of surgical tools, allowing them to use microcannulae effectively.
Different sizes of microcannulae can be used to inject fillers of nearly any type of level of viscosity. Extremely flexible, long microcannulae, for example, can be used to employ the “fanning technique”, a method that allows for treatment of a large area through a single puncture point. Please note that blunt-tip microcannulae are often too large to be used in injecting filler to fine lines.

Types of fillers available
We offer hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring linear polysaccharide that is able to bind 1,000 times its volume in water. When healthy amounts of HA are present in the body, spaces that exist between elastin and collagen fibres are sufficiently filled to provide a good supportive structure to your skin, maintaining proper hydration and volume. The substance is also responsible for giving the eyes their shape and lubricating the joints. As we age, our bodies not only produce less HA, but the substance also begins to break down in response to the exposure of free radicals. A natural, internal process called hyaluronidase also occurs. The end result of decreased HA levels is the development of typical signs of skin aging, namely wrinkles, lines, sagging, dryness and roughness. A study that appeared in The Journal of Drugs in Dermatology describes the beneficial properties of hyaluronic acid as including "space filling, lubrication [and] shock absorption."
Juvéderm® Ultra and Ultra Plus
Juvéderm® is North America’s most popular facial filler. It is a smooth gel that compensates for a decrease in HA by reintroducing the substance to your skin by injection. Once it has been injected, it binds with the water present in a patient’s skin and immediately works to fill in wrinkles or lines and restore facial/lip volume. It is also capable of stimulating collagen production.
Juvéderm® is composed of a bacterium-derived non-animal stabilized hyaluronate. The product was created due to a need for fillers that would last longer, be suitable for use without prior skin allergy testing and be associated with fewer side effects while still volumizing the skin and achieving a high rate of patient satisfaction. To create such a smooth, viscous gel, Hylacross™ technology is used. Essentially, this technology creates a higher concentration of cross-linked hyaluronate to allow for longer lasting benefits and improved patient results.
Ultra is ideal for patients who require lip augmentation, facial contouring or the correction of medium depth wrinkles. Ultra Plus is better suited to more intensive volumizing and can treat deeper folds.
For years, the primary concern in aesthetic medicine was wrinkles and creases. These were the most obvious signs of the aging process and treatments were focused solely on their removal. However, it was quickly discovered that removing wrinkles and creases alone were insufficient in rejuvenating a patient’s appearance. Cosmetic anti-aging treatments that are better in achieving a revitalization and enhancement of your aging face focus on volume loss as well.
The loss of fat in the cheeks and temples creates a sunken, gaunt face: a skeleton-like appearance that reveals your age (and can make you look older than you actually are). For evidence of this, simply look at the face of someone younger than you. You can see that their cheeks are fuller and rounder. The solution to restoring your youthfulness is to carefully replace lost volume first in the cheeks, then the temples and chin if necessary. The jawline may also be recontoured.
Currently, there is only one product available today that is specifically designed for this purpose: Voluma®. Voluma® has been specially formulated to restore facial volume lost over time and is the first of its kind.
Voluma® is an injectable volumizer based on hyaluronic acid. Its unique formulation complements collagen and elastin levels in your skin. Voluma® has a unique advantage over other products–it is formulated to be highly viscous and has a far smoother consistency to create an even finish to your facial contour. Voluma® has only 10% high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid (HMWHA). It is:
- easily injected into the skin to minimize your discomfort during treatment
- mouldable to your facial contours
- natural-looking and feeling
In addition, its high-viscosity allows it to retain its molecular structure after treatment, even when injected deeper into the skin, or below. With a higher degree of crosslinking, Voluma® allows for:
- Long-lasting results because of a higher resistance to degradation caused by free radicals and enzymes–results have been recorded to last up to 18 months
- Predictability in achieving the desired improvement because of its cohesivity
- Capable of providing the optimal lift of sagging contours
A recent clinical study performed by a group of Canadian dermatologists and a plastic surgeon found LMWHA to have several advantages in the treatment of volume loss, including a high malleability to better improve facial contours, minimum swelling and immediate patient satisfaction.
This is the primary difference between Voluma® and the other members of the Juvéderm® family, which are based on 100% HMWHA–perfect for wrinkles, but inadequate for treating serious volume loss. Voluma® rejuvenates your facial contours at a structural level. It provides maximum support where needed to achieve optimal aesthetic rejuvenation. In addition, studies have shown that adverse events and allergic reactions occur at a lower rate. There is less incidence of nodules and granulomas occurring due to its smoother texture and NO incidence of reported migrations (which means Voluma® stays where you want it to stay!).
Do you have serious creases and folds on your face that you want to get rid of? Before you turn to surgery, consider the viable nonsurgical alternative: Juvéderm® Volift®!
Volift® is a hyaluronic acid filler designed for the treatment of deep skin depressions negatively affected by aging, such as severe nasolabial folds (but not for the area around the eyes or between the eyebrows). It can also enhance facial contours and restore volume, such as in the lip area. Volift® is based on the same VYCROSS™ technology that makes the other products in the Juvéderm® family so successful in achieving smooth, natural results with only temporary minimal swelling and bruising, and because it contains lidocaine, the actual injection process is also more comfortable for the patient.
It is of the utmost importance that you select a certified and experienced medical professional to perform your treatment. A little goes a long way, and you should be comfortable knowing that you’ll be treated with a gentle touch characterized by consideration, respect and understanding. Edelstein Cosmetic believes in providing you with a higher standard of care by a medical professional who has the ability to achieve your desired results safely.
Your injection will be performed by one of our talented medical injectors, both of whom have a broad knowledge of aesthetic medicine and advanced injection techniques.
The entire injection procedure is carried out in 15 to 30 minutes and provides immediate, natural-looking (and feeling) results.
Following your treatment
Since it’s a minimally invasive treatment, dermal filler recovery is limited to minimal swelling and bruising. You will be able to return to your normal life as soon as you leave Edelstein Cosmetic.
The healing time for a given procedure varies between different patients. The following represents the general recovery you might expect following your facial injection. Individual patients may experience variations from this course.
Most patients return to normal within a couple hours of the procedure! A few experience some swelling, redness, discomfort and possibly bruising during the first few days following the injection. Most of this settles down within three days. Occasionally, the swelling can last up to one or two weeks.
What to do after your facial injection
- Extra strength Tylenol is usually adequate to manage any discomfort.
- Cool, soft, flexible ice packs may be used (or small packs of frozen peas) to keep the swelling down.
- Place the ice pack on the treated area(s) for 15-20 minutes at a time, three or four times per day.
- Keep your head elevated and use several pillows at night to help diminish the swelling.
- You can wash with soap and water, and apply make-up, the day after your injection.
- Avoid exercising strenuously, going out into the sun, exposing yourself to cold, or drinking alcohol the day of the treatment.
- Most patients can return to work the day after the injection.
The quality of your cosmetic enhancement may be compromised if you fail to return for any scheduled post-op visits, or follow the post-operative instructions. Don’t hesitate to report any unusual or concerning changes. We are here to help you achieve your desired aesthetic goals!
In general, the majority of Edelstein Cosmetic’s facial injectable patients are very pleased with their aesthetic enhancement and rejuvenation. Complications are rare. Depending upon your goals, you may require long term re-treatments with the facial injectable to maintain the desired correction or enhancement.
Juvéderm® Ultra, Ultra Plus, Voluma® and Volift® are made with natural substances, therefore these products do eventually reabsorb naturally. Patients who wish to prolong the benefits of Juvéderm® typically follow a regular injection schedule. Repeat injections are necessary for patients who wish to maintain the positive effects of their treatment. The improvements that come from a product designed to create natural-looking results, safely and easily, mean that hyaluronic acid has to absorb back into the body to provide the level of enhancement it offers.
Voluma® has been shown to achieve results that may last up to 18 months.
Volift® has been formulated to last longer than many other fillers on the market today—the manufacturer, Allergan, states that results can last up to 15 months for treatment of nasolabial folds! The norm is up to 12 months, which means you may be able to enjoy your enhancement for three extra months than what you normally expect.
Reversing your results from hyaluronic acid-based fillers
Hyaluronidase treatment is usually recommended to patients who have had hyaluronic acid injections and are unhappy with their results. When hyaluronidase is injected (as an enzyme solution) beneath the skin of a treated area, it is able to speed up the body’s natural ability to break down the filler product. This process works to reduce the effect of the filler injection, reversing the undesirable results.
This trait gives you the ability to quickly correct misplaced injections, protect patient safety and ensure satisfactory aesthetic results. Before hyaluronidase became available, any error in hyaluronic acid injections required patients to wait for the filler to naturally dissipate over several months.
Hyaluronidase is a soluble protein enzyme that is typically used to break down the hyaluronic acid found in dermal filler injection treatments like Juvéderm®. The solution works by breaking up—and helping the body to reabsorb—the filler introduced to the body during the hyaluronic acid injection. It accomplishes this by increasing tissue permeability, splitting the molecular bonds holding the hyaluronic acid together and promoting the natural cellular processes responsible for its diffusion.
Its ability to quickly disperse chemical agents makes hyaluronidase ideal for applying anaesthesia as well. For this reason it may be added to local anaesthetic solutions in order to increase their area of effect and onset speed.
How does hyaluronidase work?
A two-part study published in Journal Watch Dermatology, conducted in 2005, recorded evidence of hyaluronidase’s ability to break down cosmetic injectables. The first part of the study saw a group of twelve healthy volunteers receive two separate injections (0.2mL of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid, or NASHA) to sites located on their forearms. Several days after the gel was introduced, a blinded evaluator assessed and recorded changes to the subjects’ forearm skin. One of the previously injected sites was then treated with hyaluronidase while the other received saline solution. Four to seven days following the introduction of hyaluronidase, 80% of the NASHA gel had disappeared. The site injected with saline still possessed almost all of it, specifically 90% of the gel.
The second part of the study studied a new group who received NASHA injections at three different sites located on their forearms. After three to five days, hyaluronidase was injected to each site at different levels of concentration (30, 20 and 10 units). Four to seven days following this step of the study the researchers recorded no palpable gel in the 30 unit site and a decrease in the 20 and 10 unit sites. After two weeks the gel in the 20 unit sites had disappeared. The gel remaining in the sites that had received 10 units of hyaluronidase took four weeks to dissolve.
Researchers concluded that “hyaluronidase injections were useful in reducing [gel]” and that “larger doses completely eliminate [the effect of gel] from the implantation site.”
